Tips to Stay Safe this Spring
Are you just itching to get outside? We don’t blame you! While we may not have had the coldest winter temperatures here in Arizona compared to the rest of the country, we’re still anxious to get outside and enjoy the warm, sunny weather! While spring cleaning is always important, it’s also a good idea to make sure your home is safe and secure during these spring and summer months ahead. Check out our tips on how to do so!
Home Safety Tips
Just like making a check up appointment at the doctor, it’s a good idea to check in periodically to fix any damages to your home in order to maintain a happy home.
- Do you already have a security system? This is the most important thing you can do to make sure your house is secure.
- Smoke detectors are vital! Check these for low batteries because there’s no use in having them if they can’t go off.
- Motion sensitive outdoor lights are a great way to keep criminals from breaking in. It also makes for safety if you are going in and out of your house late at night; just in case you don’t have a flashlight handy, you’ll always be able to see where you’re going.
Driving Safety Tips
Before you travel, there are some crucial driving tips to follow.
- April showers bring May flowers! We don’t get much rain here in Arizona, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be prepared for when we do. Rain means wet driving conditions, so slow down on slippery roads and increase your following distance from the car in front of you. Also, try not to make sharp turns and also slow down!
- Learn how to share the road. Warmer weather means more motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians that you have to watch out for when driving. Always double check crosswalks before making a turn.
- Properly inflate your tires. In hot spring/summer months, the increase in temperature also means tire pressure increases. Make sure to get your car inspected before a long car ride or road trip.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Whether you are walking, biking or motorcycle-riding, nice weather makes everyone want to get outside! Be careful when you are crossing the street.
- Wait for the walk signal! Some drivers who are not familiar with stopping for pedestrians or are in a rush on a particular day may not stop and look to make sure no one is crossing the street. It is your job as a pedestrian to look both ways before crossing the road.
- Make eye contact with those driving to ensure that they acknowledge you crossing the street.
- It may seem like common sense, but we’ve all seen it happen! Don’t stop in the middle of the street, whether you’re taking a picture of the tree to the side of you or grabbing something out of your purse. Bring yourself to a safe place, like the sidewalk, that is away from any traffic.
- Be aware in parking lots and parking garages. It’s easy to be distracted by our phones or our shopping/grocery bags, but that’s also when collisions occur. Pay attention of cars driving by and of other people walking around.
Yard Work Safety Tips
With the beautiful weather we are having, it’s the perfect time to shape up your yard! Keep it disaster-free with these tips.
- Protective clothing is needed when working in the yard, especially if you are handling fertilizers and/or pesticides. This includes wearing gloves!
- Be careful when mowing your lawn- you’d be surprised how many people injure themselves each year. Also, make sure that your children are out of the way when handling heavy machinery.
- Beware of poison ivy! When you are removing weeds, be sure to identify all poisonous plants.
Spring is the time to be outside as much as possible! As always, have fun and enjoy this wonderfully warm weather, but always remember to be safe! Take these necessary precautions in order to keep yourself and those around you out of danger.
